Medieval Epic, Romance, Allegory

1.         Theme of Course:

Christian heroism, romantic love, knightly honor and chivalry, and psychological analysis – these are    not universal in the human condition. In the modern West they are still historical constructs that firs came into being in medieval France. This course will focus on the structure and functioning of the new cultural entities and on the narrative genres in which they flourished, We shall scrutinize the relationship of literature to historical reality (the mindset of a feudal-aristocratic and classical-Christian culture, attitudes toward women, etc.) and the workings of the literature itself applying modern critical approaches.

2.         Student Work and Expectations:

The course will be conducted as a seminar. Students are expected to keep up with reading assignments and to participate actively in class discussion. One long paper will be required. No exams. No incompletes.
