Land Use and Urban Form
Instructions
- Your instructor will inform you which
of the following questions you must answer. One blue book should be adequate,
but you may use up to two (2) blue books. You have been required to bring
at least one blue book to class on exam day without any markings, including
your name. The blue books will be collected at the start of the exam period,
mixed up, and then redistributed. Use only the blue books that have been
distributed in class with the instructor's mark on them.
- Each question has equal weight.
Question 1:
- What is spatial equilibrium?
- What is an open city? What is a closed
city? How do they differ?
Question 2:
- Demonstrate, derive and prove the
behavior over space of:
- Land values
- Population density
- Composite good
- Urban radius
Question 3:
- What happens in an open city if income
increases? Demonstrate, derive and prove!
Question 4:
- Describe for open and closed cities
what happens if transportation cost decreases.
Question 5:
- What if we zone density to be less
than the market level? Explain and demonstrate.
- What if rents are set near zero, and
density is set to be everywhere the same. Explain and demonstrate.
Question 6:
- A county-wide park system has been
proposed. The plan includes the construction of parks near Jonesville,
which is about fifteen miles west of the Gainesville urban boundary. What
would be the expected public response if we build a ten acre park near
Jonesville, namely the low density distant urban fringe, as opposed to
the urban core of Gainesville? Explain.
