Father of My Children
(Le père de mes enfants)

September 24th - September 30th

Un Certain Regard - Special Jury Prize, Cannes Film Festival
Best Screenplay, Lumiere Awards, France

“Beautiful, profound and, given the gathering tensions of its story, phenomenally full of life. “ — Wall Street Journal

“What French writer-director Mia Hansen-Love has created is an extraordinarily empathetic humanistic drama, a film of love, joy, sadness and hope that understands how complex our emotions are and does beautiful justice to them.” — Los Angeles Times

“A tale of cinema, a story about the agonies of trying to work outside the cinematic mainstream (even in France!). Yet what makes the movie so affecting is that it’s also a love story about a family.” — New York Times

Gregoire Canvel has everything a man could want: a wife he loves, three delightful children and his dream job - he is a film producer. Discovering talented filmmakers and developing films that fit his conception of the cinema, free and true to life, is precisely his reason for living. Gregoire devotes almost all of his time and energy to his work. Although he spends weekends with his family at their house in the country, even these precious moments are regularly interrupted by demanding directors and concerned investors. While Gregoire's very presence commands admiration, and his exceptional charisma lead many to believe he is invincible, the future of his prestigious production company, Moon Films, is in doubt; too many productions, too many risks, too many debts. Storm clouds are gathering, and Gregoire's realization that he may have made one gamble too many will trigger a series of events that will change the lives of his family forever. 1hr 50min | France & Germany | in French | NR

Best Writing - Adaptation, César Awards, France

“This small, nearly perfect film is a reminder that personal upheavals are as consequential in peoples’ lives as shattering world events.” — New York Times

"People fall in love in every country, but nowhere is the experience put on film with the flawless style, empathy and emotion the French provide. Mademoiselle Chambon is the latest in that line of deeply moving romances, an exquisite chamber piece made with the kind of sensitivity and nuance that's become almost a lost art." — LA Times

“Sandrine Kiberlain is a fragile beauty and wonderful French actress who is not as well known here as she should be. Perhaps Mademoiselle Chambon will help rectify that oversight.” — New York Post

Two adults struggle to avoid letting their erotic passion for one another guide them into infidelity in this subtly erotic, understated chamber drama from France. Vincent Lindon stars as Jean, a burly blue-collar mason who lives semi-contentedly with his wife, Anne-Marie (Aure Atika), and son, Jérémy (Arthur Le Houérou), in some unspecified provincial French town. Little passion exists in Jean's life -- until his path crisscrosses with that of Véronique Chambon (Sandrine Kiberlain), his son's violin teacher. Completely taken with the woman's cultural sophistication (manifested through her love of classical music) and intellectualism, Jean begins contemplating an affair with this virtual stranger, and offers to repair one of her windows as an excuse to be more proximate to her. Ultimately, suspense begins to build as the question lingers of whether the two will give in to their desires. Stéphane Brizé directed and authored the script, an adaptation of Eric Holder's novel. 1hr 40mins | France | in French | NR
