UF Peacejam

UF Peacejam began Fall 2006 at the University of Florida. UF student volunteers will serve as leaders and mentors for a local group of high school students that will study a Nobel Peace Laureate. The high school group will complete a national service-learning project that is presented to the Laureate at the end of the year with groups from all over the state of Florida.

Peacejam is an international education program that is centered around Nobel Peace Laureates. There are programs across the United States and in other countries that are helping local youth to study Nobel Peace Laureates and then develop peace projects in their communities that will make a difference. According to Peacejam, “the goal of this project is to inspire a new generation of peacemakers who will transform their local communities, themselves and the world.”

The PeaceJam Youth Conference

The PeaceJam Youth Conference is a two-day gathering of high school youth in one of the 19 established affiliate regions (10 within the USA and 9 located internationally). Approximately 400 people attend, representing a broad and diverse cross-section of the communities in each region. At the conference, participants interact with the featured Nobel Peace Prize Laureate through question and answer sessions and presentations from the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. Students also have a chance to present their plans for initiating positive change in their communities directly to the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. When the participants are not interacting with the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate they are engaged in many different activities. These activities include a variety of leadership workshops, meetings in small groups with youth from different schools, team building games and more. The youth also participate in a service project set up in the community in which the conference is held.
