  SUMMER PROGRAM 2008

The Chilean Ministry of Education in partnership with the United Nations Development Program-Chile sponsors a Summer volunteer English teaching program for a minimum of 10 weeks from May to August.  Graduate students and professionals with teaching experience  are encouraged to apply volunteer as English teaching assistants in public schools in communities in central Chile.

PROGRAM BACKGROUND

The National Volunteer Center supports volunteer English teaching assistant programs to compensate for students’ lack of exposure to native English speakers and to help motivate students to speak English. The Pilot Program began in 2006 in the rural community of Navidad in Region VI.  Due to program’s success and growing interest, the initiative was expanded to bring volunteers to other many other communities in 2007.  Now in it’s third year the English Opens Doors Summer Program will be expanded to over 50 volunteer teachers.

Under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, volunteer teachers work 25 hours a week leading classes that focus on developing listening and speaking skills.  Volunteers dedicate an 10 additional hours a week to planning lessons and initiating extracurricular activities in a variety of possible areas such as  sports, arts, culture or English. In mid-July during the schools’ two-week semester break, volunteers organize  and implement additional activities in the community for students or teachers depending on their own expertise.  For example, volunteers may develop “Winter School”, a fun, educational day-program for students to further develop their English, while undergraduate and graduate education students or teaching professionals may develop professional development seminars for teachers.  Summer Program volunteers may have a great impact on their school and community.
