- ESL (English as a Second Language)
- English established during a colonial period and promoted through education. No massive migration of native speakers
- Local languages continue to be used but residents use English with each other in various public spheres, such as government, business, education, and the media
- Fiji, Ghana, India, Singapore, Zimbabwe, Philippines
- EFL (English as a Foreign Language), EIL (English as an International Language), or ELF (English as a Lingua Franca)
- English taught in school and used in some academic contexts.
- English used mostly for international communication.
- Egypt, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Paraguay, Tonga
- EBL (English as a Basal Language) or ECL (English as a Community Language)
- English spoken in communities of immigrants as a minority language
