    • English established by the migration of native speakers. English displaces local languages.
    • Australia, Belize, Canada, Jamaica, the United Kingdom, USA
  • ESL (English as a Second Language)
    • English established during a colonial period and promoted through education. No massive migration of native speakers
    • Local languages continue to be used but residents use English with each other in various public spheres, such as government, business, education, and the media
    • Fiji, Ghana, India, Singapore, Zimbabwe, Philippines
  • EFL (English as a Foreign Language), EIL (English as an International Language), or ELF (English as a Lingua Franca)
    • English taught in school and used in some academic contexts.
    • English used mostly for international communication.
    • Egypt, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Paraguay, Tonga
  • EBL (English as a Basal Language) or ECL (English as a Community Language)
    • English spoken in communities of immigrants as a minority language
    • Argentina, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico.
