SUBJECT: miniactivity 7--search engines

Before you begin this miniactivity, read Chapter 2 in Sperling's _The Internet Guide_ pp.11-23. Be sure to read carefully the tips and check out the URL's he suggests.

Once you have read about the possible sources of information, try out ten(10) different search engines/directories/libraries as you look for information on your topic for your homepage.

I will know you have finished when you return this message with

1. a list of the ten (10) engines/directories/libraries you used

2. a short comment on your problems/joys as you used this approach to finding information and the advice you would give fellow teachers. Did you find certain search engines/directories/libraries more useful than others?

3. a comment on the following. Enter the topic "bear" in two or three search engines. Why do you suppose my child was surprised by what she found? Does this suggest any caveats when having students do searches? What are your solutions? Have you found a search engine which is more suitable for use with children?
