SUBJECT: miniactivity 4--mailing lists

Our next computer trick is learning how to communicate with the professional world using mailing lists or "listserves". Read in Sperling _The Internet Guide__ Chapter 3 pp24-36. As you can see, there are all sorts of computer discussion groups you can join to share ideas about teaching.

For this activity, read through the listings, and join at least 1 so you can see how they work. Be sure to take note of the "Watch Out's"

Read carefully the instructions on how to join a mailing list. The usual routine is 1. send your email to the address given 2. leave the subject section blank 3. type in the simple subscribe message they give

don't add anything else as your message is read by a machine rather than a person.

You will receive welcoming information and instructions on how to proceed or unproceed, i.e. remove your name from the mailing list if you decide the group is not for you or the amount of mail you receive is overwhelming.

Don't give me a report on this activity until NOVEMBER 1. I want you to have extended experience with at least one group before you make your evaluation. You might want to try out several of the services listed.

If you find one that you think is particularly interesting for the group, email the class to share your find.

Happy Listserving Tman
