Teacher training and materials development. Developing academic language proficiency with a focus on writing and computer assisted instruction. Distance education. The role of interaction in classroom-based instruction.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
University of Florida, Gainesville FL (1971-present) Associate professor of English and Linguistics. Teaches in an electronic classroom. Coordinates teacher training program in teaching English as a second language (ESL). Former director of English Language Institute. Develops programs for distance education. Teaches courses in ESL teaching methods, ESL curriculum development, ESL materials development, Modern English Structure, history of the English language, English as a world language, contrastive analysis, second language acquisition, bilingualism, and language planning.

University of Utrecht, Utrecht, Netherlands (Winter/Spring 2009) University of Florida/University of Utrecht exchange professor, taught World English and Introduction to Sociolinguistics.

Shandong University at Weihai, Weihai, China, (Summer 2008). Guest professor. Taught advanced courses in pronunciation and conversation to English majors.

Philippine Department of Education, Culture, and Sports, Pasig, Metro Manila, Philippines (1996-1997) Fulbright consultant in English language teaching. Presented workshops throughout the Philippines to more than 4,000 secondary and tertiary English, science, and math teachers on teaching methods which promote English language acquisition. Taught 800 teachers how to use computers and the internet to enhance their teaching. Trained Peace Corps volunteers how to give in-service training to high school English teachers.

Janus Pannonius University, Pecs, Hungary (Winter/Spring 1990) Fulbright travel grant, exchange scholar in TEFL. Taught academic writing, American culture, and sociolinguistics and retrained Russian language teachers as English teachers.

Universidad de las Americas, Cholula, Puebla, Mexico (1982-1983) Visiting Professor. Evaluated and redesigned English language curriculum, retrained faculty.

University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas (1968-1971). Coordinated intensive English programs and trained teachers.

Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah (1964-1968).Taught German and prepared Peace Corps training materials for the Cakchiquel Indian language in Guatemala.

Other. Dr. Thompson has also taught in Germany and Guatemala and has conducted ESL teacher training workshops in many parts of the USA. He taught a short course on web-based ESL at TESOL Academy 2002 in Orlando.

Dr. Thompson has created three distance education course for English Language Teaching, has published three books or monographs and sixteen articles about languages and language teaching, and has given more than sixty professional papers and workshops about teaching academic English as a second or foreign language and cross cultural communication at national and international meetings, including ten presentations on using computers and the Internet in language teaching. He is the author of Filipino English and Taglish: Language Switching from Multiple Perspectives (Amsterdam: John Benjamins 2003) and Making Sense of English: Interaction and Modern English Structure (forthcoming)
