Have you ever wondered:

• What flying saucers have to do with ESP? (actually nothing but it got your attention)
• How to create English classes for special programs?
• How to use the Internet to enhance a class you are teaching?
• How to prepare materials for the Internet?

If so, you have come to the right place.
I want you to experience different ways of learning so we'll be following what I call "The Hungarian Plan." When I taught in Hungary, one interesting way that classes were formed was to have a professor choose an interesting text and then to have the students meet in his office, in a cafe, or in a classroom to discuss the reading. Another was to have students work in teams on special projects with weekly input from the professor. Following this Hungarian Plan we will have three classes going at once. You'll see how they interconnect as we go along.
 
• Class One. We'll meet on Tuesdays until Spring Break to discuss Teachers as Course Developers. As an application for this reading, we will develop materials for Academic Spoken English and Scholarly Writing, special ESL programs administered by the Program in Linguistics.
• Class Two. We'll meet on Tuesdays after Spring Break to discuss The Self-Directed Teacher: Managing the learning process. The applications for this reading will come as we make adjustments in the materials we create for the Academic Spoken English and the Scholarly Writing Programs.
• Class Three. On Thursdays we divide into course development teams and learn how to create materials for students and teachers to use on the Internet. The text for this class will be Network-based Language Teaching. For those of you who are new to using computers in teaching, I recommend that you also buy Dave Sperling's Internet Guide. Applications for this class will be Internet materials that you prepare for use in Academic Spoken English or Scholarly Writing. Sometimes we will meet in the classroom and sometimes with your team in my office so I can demonstrate how to use various computer programs and check on your progress.


We will also learn how to give presentations at professional meetings. Everyone is required to submit a proposal for a presentation at the Sunshine State TESOL 25th Annual Convention at St. Pete in 17-19 May 2001. Grades:

• 60  points  Class participation (i.e. attendance: 2 points per meeting)
• 40  points  Sunshine State TESOL proposal (20 points for submission, 20 points for acceptance)
• 100 points  Four Internet miniactivities  (25 points each)
• 300 points  English for Special Purposes course development including Internet materials (team project) All materials are due at show and tell April 24.
