About Ray Russo
Dr. Ray Russo, geophysics
professor at the University of Florida, works on the flow of the
Earth's mantle and its relation to global surface tectonics. To
figure out how the Earth's mantle flows in situ, he uses temporary field
deployments of seismometers (currently in southern Chile, and most
recently before that in Hawaii), freely-distributed seismic data, and
computer modeling of large-scale tectonics. Russo has taught
undergraduate and graduate classes in physical geology, structural
geology, tectonophysics, terrestrial gravity and magnetism, and
seismology. He also developed and taught a course aimed at
examining connections between physical sciences and the arts, called Science and Art in the Western World.
Coworkers and Collaborators
Russo was a student of the late Robert C. Speed, and was
co-advised in his thesis work by Emile A. Okal, at Northwestern
University. Since then, he was worked with many scientists on a
variety of projects:
Caribbean Seismology and
Tectonics: Dr. R. C. Speed and Dr. E. A. Okal; Dr. Keith
Rowley, Dr. William Bah Ambeh, Mr. Lloyd Lynch, and Ms. Joan Latchman,
of the Seismic Research Unit, University of the West Indies, St.
Augustine, Trinidad & Tobago; Dr. Matthias Franke, now at Kinemetrics; Dr. Antonio
Villasenor, now at CSIC in Barcelona; Dr. Paul R. Lundgren, now at JPL;
Dr. David E. James and Dr. John C. VanDecar, of DTM/Carnegie; Dr.
Enrique Gajardo Wolff, then at INTEVEP; Ms. Jennifer L. Marshall, now
at University of Ohio; and Sr. Amerigo Montilla of the Universidad del
Oriente in Cumana, Venezuela.
Shear Wave Splitting and
Upper Mantle Anisotropy: Dr. Paul G. Silver, of the Dept.
of Terrestrial Magnetism, Carnegie Institution of Washington; Mr. Steve
Schoenecker, then at Princeton; Dr. Cecily J. Wolf, recently at
University of Hawaii; Drs. Alain Vauchez, Guilhem Barruol, and Andrea
Tommasi, all at the Laboratoire de Tectonophysique, Universite de
Montpellier II; Dr. Emile Okal, Mr. Brandon Gomer, and Dr. Eryn Klosko,
of Northwestern University; Dr. Ruth Murdie, now at CTBTO in Vienna;
Dr. Karen Kleinspehn, at the University of Minnesota; Dr. Basil Tikoff,
at University of Wisconsin, Madison; and Dr. Jonathan Lees, now at
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Gravity Modeling:
Dr. R. C. Speed.
Numerical Modeling of
Lithospheric Deformation: Dr. Paul R. Lundgren, of JPL;
and Dr. Erin K. Beutel, now at College of Charleston, South Carolina.
Seismic Attenuation:
Dr. Ruth E. Murdie, CTBTO; Dr. Victor I. Mocanu, of the Department of
Geology and Geophysics, University of Bucharest; Mr. Brandon Gomer, Dr.
Han Li, and Ms. Petra Pancoskova, all at Northwestern University.
Tectonics and Geodynamics of
the Carpathians and Surroundings: Dr. Victor I. Mocanu and
Ms. Mirela Dardac, of the Department of Geology and Geophysics,
University of Bucharest.
Geodynamics and Structure of
the Chile Ridge Subduction: Dr. Diana Comte Selman, of the
Departamento de Geofisica, Universidad de Chile, Santiago; Dr. Ruth E.
Murdie, CTBTO; Dr. Victor I. Mocanu, University of Bucharest; and Mr.
Alejandro Gallego, now at the Department of Geological Sciences,
University of Florida.

National Center for Science and Technology, Hanoi, Vietnam; Drs. Michio
Hashizumi and Semchai Nakapaklungrat, Chulalongkorn University,
Bangkok; Dr. Wan Hasiah Abdullah, Malaya University; and Dr. Low Kong
Chiew, Malaysian Meteorological Department.
Outside Academia
Russo is married to Sarah A. Stanley, daughter of Dr. James C.
and Nancy M. Stanley of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ray and Sarah have
two children, Anne Irene (b. Oct. 2003)
and Charles Raymond (b. Jan.
2006), who are doted on by their grandparents from Michigan, as well as
by Ray's parents, Dr. Raymond M. Russo Sr. and Joanne L. Russo, of
Pleasantville, New York. Besides playing with the children, Russo
enjoys travelling to look at art (particularly in Italy, France, or
Spain) or to see a classical music concert or an opera, baseball (go
Yankees!), good company to go with good food and wine, playing the
piano, and hiking and swimming with the family dogs.
