About Ray Russo
Dr. Ray Russo, geophysics
professor at the University of Florida, works on the flow of the
Earth's mantle and its relation to global surface tectonics. To
figure out how the Earth's mantle flows in situ, he uses temporary field
deployments of seismometers (currently in southern Chile, and most
recently before that in Hawaii), freely-distributed seismic data, and
computer modeling of large-scale tectonics. Russo has taught
undergraduate and graduate classes in physical geology, structural
geology, tectonophysics, terrestrial gravity and magnetism,and
seismology. He also developed and taught a course aimed at
examining connections between physical sciences and the arts, called Science and Art in the Western World.

Russo was a student of the late Robert C. Speed, and was
co-advised in his thesis work by Emile A. Okal, at Northwestern
University. Since then, he was worked with many scientists on a

Russo is married to Sarah A. Stanley, daughter of Dr. James C.
and Nancy M. Stanley of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ray and Sarah have
two children, Anne Irene (b. Oct. 2003)
and Charles Raymond (b. Jan.
2006), who are doted on by their grandparents from Michigan, as well as
by Ray's parents, Dr. Raymond M. Russo Sr. and Joanne L. Russo, of
Pleasantville, New York. Besides playing with the children, Russo
enjoys travelling to look at art (particularly in Italy, France, or
Spain) or to see a classical music concert or an opera, baseball (go
Yankees!), good company to go with good food and wine, playing the
piano, and hiking and swimming with the family dogs.
