They sin who make discord between wisdom and eloquence, but what
is all eloquence without wisdom except, as Cato says, glossaries of
the dead? We are able to live without language, although not
comfortably, but without wisdom we are not able to live at all. He
is perhaps not humane who is unfamiliar with polite letters, but he
who is deprived of philosophy is no longer even a man.
(Pico della Mirandola)
