Research Dr. Shrivastav
joined the Projects: He directs the “Voice Acoustics and Perception Laboratory” and is actively involved in a number of research projects. The largest ongoing projects include the following: 1. Perception of Voice Quality: This research project seeks to understand the perception of dysphonic voice quality and to build computational models for its prediction/quantification. 2. Speech Intelligibility in Dysarthria: This research project seeks to understand the factors that impact speech intelligibility in patients with dysarthria. One goal is to develop an appropriate metric for speech intelligibility that can be implemented in real-world clinical care of patients. The current research is focused primarily on patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, but this will be expanded to other conditions as well. 3. Perception of Emotions in Speech: This project is attempting to understand how listeners identify emotion in speech. One application of this research is to develop better models for the assessment and treatment of Aprosodia. 4. Optimization of digital hearing devices: This project is developing novel techniques to fine tune or “optimize” digital hearing devices such as cochlear implants and hearing aids. The primary objective is to develop methods that allow individual listeners gain maximum speech intelligibility benefit from the DSP capabilities of their hearing devices. 5. Aging in Speech: The goal of this project is to understand how speech changes with age and to model how listeners estimate a speaker’s age from their speech output alone. This work is critical for many reasons, such as to discriminate “normal” age-related changes in speech from those changes that arise from a disease. A number of other smaller/pilot projects are also ongoing. Collaborators These projects are done in partnership with a number of other colleagues within and outside the University. Amongst others, these include: David A. Eddins, University of Rochester Lee Krause, Audigence, Inc. John G. Harris, University of Florida Christine Sapienza, University of Florida James D. Harnsberger, University of Florida John Rosenbek, University of Florida Research Grants and Contracts These projects could not be completed without research grants and contracts. Our research has been funded by: The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD); one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The Department of Veterans Affairs, Rehabilitation Research and Development (VA RR&D). Audigence, Inc. University of Florida Students (Research Assistants, Volunteers) Student volunteers and research assistants are critical to the success of our research laboratory. We have several volunteer and paid positions available. Students with all levels of expertise and training have the opportunity to work in the lab. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Rahul Shrivastav to visit the laboratory or for more information.
