Study Questions for 1/17, week 2.

Chapter 4, Hague and Harrop.
1. Prepare to argue the pro or con of humanitarian intervention by the international community, international law, or humanitarian groups in the decisions and activitise of the (sovereign) state (see page 55 of Hague and Harrop).  Groups I, II, and III will argue the "pro" side; groups IV and V will argue the "con" side.

Chapter 5, Hague and Harrop.
1. Define the word "institution," as used in our text.  How does that concept relate to the "state" and to "society"?
2. Where is the "nation" in their analysis?  (For "nation," use the definition we have been talking about, i.e., the modern nation-state).
3. Identify three major points about comparison -- either how to compare or why to compare.

Chapter 6, Hague and Harrop.
1. Prepare to argue the pro or con of the significance of political culture (page 81).  Groups I, II, and III will argue pro; groups IV and V will argue con.
2. Where is "state," "society," and "nation-state" in the analysis in this chapter?
3. Note: pay special attention to the section on religion and state for discussion.
