| Dr. Pharies received his Ph.D. in Romance Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1979, having studied with the renowned Romanist Yakov Malkiel. Among his most important publications are Diccionario etimológico de los sufijos españoles [Etymological Dictionary of Spanish Suffixes] (Madrid: Gredos, 2002), University of Chicago Spanish Dictionary, fifth edition (University of Chicago Press, 2002), and Breve historia de la lengua española / A Brief History of the Spanish Language (published simultaneously in Spanish and English by the University of Chicago Press, 2007). His current research project is tentatively entitled Introducción a la historia del léxico del español [Introduction to the History of the Spanish Vocabulary]. |
