USEFUL WEBSITES--ADOLESCENT FICTION AND FILM

GENERAL SITES

A to Z Teacher Stuff This site contains lesson plans, thematic units, and activities for children's and adolescent literature. Although this site has many ideas for a wide selection of books, if it does not contain what you are looking for, it provides links to many other similar sites. This site is most useful if you already have a book in mind. I found other sites to be more useful if you just had a topic but had not decided on specific titles.--Sarah Gittleson

YA Literature "This site provides a resource for English Teachers, media specialists, students and parents looking for high interest literature for young adult and/or reluctant readers."--Amy Bindley.

Annotated Bibliography of Websites on Children's Literature and Other Related Topics-- by graduate student Michelle Dulczewski at Salem State College, Massachusetts. This site offers links to 25 sites which deal with children's literature, young adult literature, and educational resources for teachers.--Amy Bindley.

Carol Hurst's Children's Literature Site Wow! Although "A to Z Teacher Stuff" had a lot of information, this one made it look diminutive. The cover page is set up so that you can easily go to a page to look at book reviews, lesson ideas, and even integrated lesson ideas organized by subject area (e.g. Colonial America, trains). Finally, a section on professional resources is included for interested educators, with links to other useful websites. This site contained very useful, easy to adapt lesson plans.--Sarah Gittleson

Critical Books on Children's Literature . The actual list of books is found by following the link, "Books of Criticism Indexed." This site is based on a printed book, by the site author, Linnea Henderson. The book's name is Children's Literature: A Guide to the Criticism. Boston:G. K. Hall, 1987. Available at Education Library or Library West: Z2014.5 .H46 1987 .

BDD Teachers Resource Center For finding lesson ideas this site is particularly easy to use. In the Teacher's Guides section there are such categories as alphabetical title index, awards index, Black history month index, and on and on. . . . My favorite was the thematic index. It listed many important themes, such as acceptance and communication, and then describes many books that can be used to teach that particular topic.--Sarah Gittleson [note: a commercial site; BDD wishes to sell their books!]

BDD Young Readers Section The young readers section includes reviews of books that young readers may enjoy, such as How to Bug Your Parents, by Lee Wardlow.--Rahim Rivera [note: a commercial site; BDD wishes to sell their books!]

Humanities Research on the Web: The Voice of the Shuttle

Children's Literature Web Guide. An excellent site for finding information on adolescent as well as children's literature, this site was made and is maintained by David K. Brown of the University of Calgary. It includes new sites and articles related to children's literature, lists of award winners, a commentary on children's books, and a guide to finding other web sites. It has a section on discussion boards [groups?] and a reference section. An impressive feature is the "Doucette Index, a mini-search engine. Visitors can type in the author and/or title of a children's or young adult's book and suggestions for teaching it will appear if available. Another important feature of the site is the speed with which it is updated. While "What's New" had not been touched since April, other areas had been changed within the last few weeks. I think it is important for sites to stay current in order to continue to be an effective tool. This site certainly is that.--Alexis Witham.

International Movie Database. This database of more than 140,000 movie may be searched by title, author, director, etc., and contains a glossary of film terminology. Note: individual pages found by searching with this database can be directly addressed only if you type the address precisely as found--spaces, punctuation, occasionally arcane numbers, etc. It may be easier to simply search again.

American Library Association Awards List This web site is provided by the American Library Association. It includes award-winning books for 1997 and 1998, as well as nominations for 1999 award winners. This would be a valuable source for finding a 1997 or 1998 book for our project.--Amy Bindley.

Young Adult Literature Site This web site is dedicated to young adult literature and includes a description of young adult literature. It also outlines areas of focus for those interested in adolescent literature.-- Amy Bindley.

Young Adult Library SiteThis site contains short summaries and reviews of many novels for adolescents. It also contains resources for parents and teachers about genres in adolescent literature, history of literature. etc.--Amy Bindley. The creator of this site is a German graduate student at the University of Iowa. The 30+ titles considered are divided into thematic groups, and Thorven Lucht welcomes more reviews created by others. However, he was not sure he would be in the U.S. after 6/97. Hmmm.--Craddock

The authors exclude films based on books and films the students have probably seen anyway. The site highlights 50 films meeting the author's criteria and lists the issues explored in each film.--Amy Bindley.

Four current young adult novels. Named "Teachers' and Students' Guide to the Best of Young Adult Literature," this site highlights four current young adult novels. For each selection, the site provides information on the book's author, historical background, other internet links, and activities for teachers interested in teaching the book.--Amy Bindley.

Barr's English Class Designed by a Nantucket English teacher for his own students and other secondary school English students and teachers. Students can go there to find information relevant to their class and have samples of their work posted there. The teacher posts information about himself that probably helps students relate to him.
