MESOZOIC RIFT BASINS

Mesozoic rifting of the Atlantic margins produced large scale rift basins and aulacogens bounded by normal faults. Some of these basins remained above sea level and were sites of major clastic sedimentation, largely fluvial and lacustrine. Other rift basins soon subsided below sea level and were sites of marginal marine sedimentation.

Your assignment is to read you text dealing with these marine and non-marine rift basins:

  • Sedimentary characteristics of non-marine and marine rift basins
  • Paleoenvironmental characteristics of non-marine and marine rift basins, and
  • Hydrocarbon formation in marine rift basins and aulacogens
