What is expected of you:

a) Reading:  You should complete each reading assignment before the Thursday class session and be ready to discuss the themes and substance of the assignments. Please make it a habit to bring the assigned readings to class with you, as we will often consult the texts during discussion.  It is your responsibility to contact me if you have difficulty locating the reading assignments.

b)  Attendance:  You are responsible for all the material covered in lectures. It is expected that you will make it your business to attend all class sessions unless special circumstances make attendance impossible.  If you must miss a class, please make arrangements with another student to get notes. But remember:  if you miss a substantial number of classes, your participation grade will suffer proportionately.

c)  Assignments:  All assignments, with the exception of in-class exams, should be typed and double spaced.  Failure to complete an assignment by the appointed time will result in a failing grade on that assignment.  Late work will not be accepted.

d) Course Requirements:

i) An in-class midterm, worth 25 % of your final grade.

ii) Two short writing assignments, due on 31 January and 18 March, each worth 20% of your final grade.

iii)  Participation in class discussions, worth 5%;

iv)  An in-class final worth 30% of your final grade.

v) Regular and punctual attendance is required. Excused absences (i.e., illness, university business, etc.) must be certified by documentation, such as a doctor's note. If you miss more than 2 class meetings without a valid written excuse you will be docked a full grade increment; the penalty will increase for each absence thereafter.

e) Academic Honesty:  According to the UF Academic Honesty Guidelines, „an academic honesty offense is defined as the act of lying, cheating, or stealing academic information so that one gains academic advantage. As a University of Florida student, one is expected to neither commit nor assist another in committing an academic honesty violation. Additionally, it is the student¼s duty to report observed academic honesty violations.¾ In writing papers, be certain to give proper credit whenever you use words, phrases, ideas, arguments, and conclusions drawn from someone else¼s work.  Failure to give credit by quoting and/or footnoting is PLAGIARISM and is unacceptable.  All academic honesty offenses will result in a failing grade in this class. You may consult the Dean of Students Office website for further information:  http://www.dso.ufl.edu/judicial/

Please do not hesitate to contact the instructor during the semester if you have any individual concerns or issues that need to be discussed. Students requesting classroom accommodation must first register with the Dean of Students Office (www.dso.ufl.edu/drp/).  The Dean of Students Office will provide documentation to the student who must then provide this documentation to the instructor when requesting accommodation.
