Write
a brief (1-2 double spaced typed pages) characterization of the middle ages.
This can be based assumptions you bring, prior knowledge, or new research,
however you must address the following questions: 1. When did the medieval
period begin, when did it end? 2. What are the defining or distinguishing
qualities of the period? In other words, how were the middle ages different
than the periods that came immediately before and after? Be sure to take into
consideration the reflections on periodization in the readings for this week.
If you do consult outside sources, be sure to site them on a 'works consulted'
page or according to historical notation style (see Rampolla, pp. 100-133). Be
prepared to discuss this at the precept session.
