Honda Katsuichi:   Soshite waga sokoku-- Nihon (Now for Our Motherland-- Japan, 1983)

Below are selected translations of Honda Katsuichi's Soshite waga sokoku-- Nihon by students in UF's JPW4131 (Fourth Year Readings in Japanese, Spring 2000).
The book is a journalist's account from ground level of the transformations being wrought in four areas of rural North Japan by postwar policies of high growth. The translations were done as a companion to classroom reading of Honda's legendary late 1960's reportage on American society Amerika gassh*koku (The United States of America, 1973). Both texts are available in convenient pocket editions from Asahi Bunko.
