On-going projects

Genetic analysis of variants contributing to alcohlism in Native American populations

·         Conducted high through-put genetic analysis of 13 SNPs and 1 STR from the alpha synuclein gene in Dr. Andrew Singleton’s laboratory at NIH/NIAAA in April, 2005

o        Performing statistical analyses on data to determine significant association with alcoholism

·         Finishing SNP typing of ADH gene in Plains population

 

Past projects:

Phylogenetic Analysis of Syphilis (Treponema pallidum) Sequences

  • Used sequence data from tpr genes generated by colleagues at the University of Washington, Seattle

·         Analyzing phylogenies for several loci to determine evolutionary history of the tpr gene family and subspecies of T. pallidum organisms

Genetic variation at the mitochondrial 9-bp repeat locus in the Sakha of Siberia

  • Master’s Research in the Laboratory of Dr. Mulligan
  • Research involved PCR analysis and genetic sequencing of mtDNA from Siberian samples

 

Other Lab Experience

·         Spring 2005-present: Conducting research in the laboratory of Dr. Maureen Goodenow, Department of Pathology

o        Sequence determination of drug-resistant mutations in response to efavirenz and nelfinavir drug treatments in juvenile HIV+ patients

o        Isolating viral RNA from patients’ plasma, conducting PCR, ligation-transformation, and processing of samples for genetic sequencing

·         Spring 2003-Spring 2004: Conducted research in the laboratory of Dr. Joyce Koenig, Department of Neonatology

o        Separated neutrophils and CD34+ cells from cord and adult blood, isolated RNA from cells, performed real-time PCR on samples

·         Fall 2002-Spring 2003: Assisted in research in the laboratory of Ginger Clark, ICBR

-  Associate Director of UF Genetics Institute, an interdisciplinary genetics research institute combining the College of Liberal Arts and Science, College of Medicine, and Institute of Food and Agriculture Science
