RUT 3515: Russian Fairy Tales (0138)
This course will introduce students to a wide selection of Russian
folklore and fairy tales, and will examine the aesthetic, social, and
psychological values that they reflect. Students will enhance their
understanding of the continuing influence of fairy tales and folk
beliefs in Russian culture, music, film, popular culture, and everyday
life. Taught entirely in English. (Gen Ed credit: H, N)

RUS 4341: Russian Media Culture (03DG)
In “Russian Media Culture,” advanced-intermediate students will
study the recent history and ongoing trends in the Russian mass media
and examine a variety of themes dedicated to better understanding the
contours and impact of web-based technology and communication in
Russian society and culture today. To promote the independent use and
study of Russian beyond the walls of the classroom, the course will
help students develop the linguistic, cultural and technological skills
needed to access, interpret, and discuss a variety of content and
interfaces currently available through the Russian internet and new
media technologies. Likely thematic clusters include: Old media in the
new media era; The Russian blogosphere and microblogging; New media and
social networking; Online visual media; Politics and/of the internet;
Virtual entertainment, fashion, and consumer culture; (Un)civil society
in the digital age. Students will also have the opportunity to
independently pursue other career or personal, Russia-related interests
using web-based resources. Prerequisite: RUS 4930 (“Grammar 2") or the
equivalent, or instructor's permission. (Gen Ed: H, N – pending
approval)
