What I'm up to...
Research
- After a 4-day meeting in Norway in June to work on an edited volume dedicated to Russian language, culture, and politics
in the era of new media technology (tentatively titled Digital Russia), I
devoted the bulk of my summer research time to finishing my own book,
a cultural history of the Russian language from glasnost to Twitter.
- Meanwhile three book chapters came out over the summer—my article on the economies
of obscenity in the post-Soviet 1990s ("Language Culture and Identity in post-Soviet Russia...), a piece on ex-President Dmitry Medvedev and Twitter ("Medvedev's New Media Gambit: The Language of Power in 140 Characters or Less"), and a study of the rhetorical style of
Vladimir Putin in the collection Putin as Celebrity and Cultural Icon.
- After a busy spring of lectures and travel
(including Stockholm, Uppsala, Edinburgh, Bergen and Savannah), I've
settled in for a spell before the national conference season kicks in
in November (with meetings in New Orleans and Boston).
Teaching
- I'm slated to teach 2 courses in Fall 2012 ~ "Russian Fairy Tales" (RUT 3514) and "Russian Media Culture" (RUW 4341).
