Writing Issues for University Students

I. Basic Issues
    A. Grammar (Below are the three most common problems I encounter; make sure you avoid them.)
            1. Run-on sentences (Comma splice); however is not a conjunction!
            2. Sentence fragments
            3. Odd capitalizations
    B. Avoid using slang or colloquialisms
    C. Always proofread your paper!!!!

II. Basic expression (how you communicate your ideas)
    A. Avoid being vague; precision is essential; give specific examples.
    B. Awkward passages--take the time to rewrite and smooth out bumpy sections where you ineloquently express certain ideas.
    C. Problem of "overwriting"--Eschew obfuscation (be direct!)
            1. Word choice--keep it simple
            2. Decode complicated concepts

III. Argumentation--Ask yourself these questions as you write and rewrite your paper.
    A. Do you have a clear point or thesis? (Pick a title for the essay)
    B. Do you use evidence persuasively to support your thesis? (Avoid long quotes and use short ones effectively)
    C. Do you have effective transitions between paragraphs?

IV. Further Issues--Frequently spotted problems
    A. Proofread, Proofread, Proofread!
    B. Usage: Make sure your verbs match your nouns--anthropomorphizing
    C. Paragraphs are more than one sentence!
    D. Work at greater depth--be specific, give concrete examples, always back up a generality with evidence

One of the best online guides for help with writing is the Writer's Handbook from the University of Wisconsin.

There are resouces here at the university to help you work through writing issues.  Writing effectively is NOT easy and demands sustained effort and practice.

The University Reading and Writing Center is one place to turn for assistance.
Another resource available at UF is the Dial Center for Written and Oral Communication.
