Voltaire, Candide (Writing Assignment)

This week, you will have two options for the short 1-2 page writing assignment.  The first is more traditional while the second allows you to be a bit more creative.  

Candide is obviously a biting satire that highlights the inconsistencies and hypocrisy of Voltaire’s society.  It is primarily a negative text that exposes the corruption deep within his society.   Still, if we look closely we can get an idea of what Voltaire valued in this world.  What is the ideal society for Voltaire?  In your answer give at least three specific examples from the text that illustrate what the ideal society might look like for Voltaire.

Through the magic of cryogenics, Voltaire has miraculously reappeared alive and well in the 21st century.  Though alive and well, he is not particularly wealthy and to make a quick buck he turns to Hollywood.   He looks for a producer willing to remake Candide but now updated for the 21st century.   For this assignment, I want you to adopt the voice of Voltaire and write a letter to a prospective Hollywood producer.  Describe your plans to remake Candide for the silver screen.   In your letter tell how you would adapt and update one scene from the original satire.  Have fun with this assignment.  Feel free to make suggestions for a potential cast for this project.
