Plato’s Republic
Books One-Two assignment (1-43; 327a-368d)
This introductory section to the Republic, lays out the central
question of the entire text—What is justice and why is it a good?
The following is a three-part question. Simply answer the three
questions--one paragraph for each. This is NOT an integrated
essay. There is no need to try to make transitions between your
three paragraphs.
In Book One, we encounter three individuals, Cephalus, Polemarchus and Thrasymachus, who wrestle with this question.
1. How do they define justice, and then
how does Socrates illustrate the shortcomings with each
definition? Highlight specific passages from the text in your
answer.
In Book Two we encounter two other individuals, the brothers Glaucon and Adeimantus.
2. How do they add to this discussion of justice?
How does Glaucon understand justice?
What does Adeimantus think is lacking
in this discussion and what does he think must be demonstrated for
proving that justice is stronger than injustice? Again highlight
specific passages from the text in your answer.
3. So
what? What is the relevance of this extended discussion on
justice for our society today? Highlight one specific example
that you believe underscores the relevance of Plato's discussion of
justice for 21st century America.
Bring your copy of the Republic and your answers to these questions to class on Tuesday, August 27.
