Answer one of the following two questions in a two-page essay due Tuesday, October 1 in class.
Since the publication of The Prince,
Machiavelli has been demonized by many. The word Machiavellian in
fact has distinct negative connotations. But despite his critics
who saw him as a despiser of Christian morality, Machiavelli himself
claimed to be a devout Christian. How would he have made this
argument? Highlight at least two passages from The Prince to support your argument.
Machiavelli was obviously a keen observer of human nature. How
would he have described the general populace, those over whom the
prince exercises his authority? Come up with at least three
general characterizations of “the people” drawn from specific examples
from the text. Conclude by reflecting how his view and
understanding of human nature vary from that of More and
Comenius? Be specific.
