Modeling Jury Decision Making

The biggest predictor of post-deliberation verdict is the pre-deliberation verdict preferences of the individuals within the jury. However, research also suggests that the deliberation process can affect the final decision made by the jury and therefore has the potential to influence the outcome of the jury. Despite the importance of jury deliberation, most research investigating jury decisions has either focused on the decisions of individual jurors or has addressed the input-output variables in jury deliberation that affect the jury’s ultimate decision. In this group of studies we, are using knowledge about group behavior from social psychology and knowledge about juror behavior from legal psychology to create a comprehensive model of jury deliberation.
