Lisa E. HaselAbout MeHello!I was born in Phoenix, Arizona and spent the first 18 years of my life growing up in the Valley of the Sun. After high school, I went on to do my undergraduate work at Tufts University in Medford, MA. Although I had multiple different career aspirations during my first few years at college, those eventually fizzled as my love for the field of Psychology grew. During my sophomore year, I began working with Michael Carlin at the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center, where we conducted research that examined intelligence related differences in perception and cognition. However, when it came time to decide what career path I wanted to take, I did a lot of soul searching and eventually decided to focus on a career in the field of Psychology and Law. One of the factors that attracted me to this field was that my work, and the work of others in this field, eventually impacts the lives of others.
After applying to way too many graduate schools, I decided to attend Iowa State University in order to study with Gary Wells, an internationally recognized expert in eyewitness issues and probably the best mentor a graduate student could hope to have. During my four years in graduate school I also had the opportunity to spend a semester working at the Innocence Project as their first Social Psychology Research Fellow. The Innocence Project is a non-profit organization, founded by Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld, that works to exonerate people who have been wrongfully convicted based on post-conviction DNA testing and works to instigate policy change throughout the country to decrease the number of wrongful convictions. While in New York City, I also spent time doing research with Saul Kassin, a leading expert in confession issues at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
After receiving my Ph.D. in 2008, I spent a year as a traveling post-doctoral scholar. I spent the first half of the fall semester teaching Social Psychology to approximately 600 students at Iowa State University, and then I hit the road. The rest of the year, I traveled around to establish and/or continue research collaborations with Dan Wright at Florida International University in Miami, FL; Steve Clark at UC Riverside in Riverside, CA; and Saul Kassin at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, NY.
In 2009, I decided to accept the offer to join the Department of Sociology and Criminology & Law at the University of Florida, and I could not be happier with my decision. I am lucky to have wonderful colleagues, students, and quality of life in Gainesville (and that means a lot coming from a self-proclaimed city girl!). As can be seen by the picture on this page, both my dog Hunter and I have fully embraced the Gator spirit.
