Who I Am

My academic career comes in two flavors. I am a professor of literature interested in romanticism, especially the Gothic. I still teach this subject. About ten years ago I became interested in commercial culture, especially marketing and advertising. I teach a course called Advertising & Culture, which tries to interpret American culture in terms of commercialism.

I am also a professor in the advertising department. In spring 2006 I have a book coming out called Where Men Hide from Columbia University Press and in the next few years I plan to finish Shopping for God: How Christianity Moved From In Your Heart To In Your Face for Simon & Schuster. From time to time I consult and speak on such subjects as advertising, branding, luxury, the mess non-profits are in, and marketing narratives.
