The character known simply as “The Operative” is trying to employ the ancient Roman concept of death with honor.  Does he succeed?

 

 

One of the goals of the Alliance is to govern everyone whether they belong to the central government or not. Why do the main characters rebel against the Alliance and reject the idea that a totalitarian government, even if it seems to have good intentions, should have authority over everyone? 

 

 

The Operative is a member of the Alliance who is striving to make “a world without sin.”  What has he sacrificed in his attempts to achieve this goal?
