TA:Monika Lipinski

Course objectives:

Introduce you to (1) earth materials (minerals and rocks) and describe their classification and properties; (2) processes that occur on the earth surface; (3) to marine geology;4) to the earth's interior and internal processes; and (5) tie all of these facts and observations into one unifying paradigm - plate tectonics.

Some useful & important information:

• Geology is somewhat like learning a foreign language because there will be many new words and terms to learn.Consequently, vocabulary will be important.I suggest that throughout the semester you keep a list of terms and their definitions or descriptions of processes that they describe.

• We will also cover a lot of material during the semester. Therefore, one of the most important study habit you can develop in order to do well in the class is to keep up with reading and other assignments.

• Attendance is important – most of the material will come from the lectures. Therefore, attendance will be checked in most of the classes.I will explain the procedure to be used during the first class.

• There will be three in-class exams and a final exam.Your in-class exam with the lowest grade will not be factored into your final grade. The final is cumulative and mandatory.

• Cheating will not be tolerated. If you are caught cheating, you will fail the class.

• My notes will be posted on the web.I will try to post them before lecture, but may not be able to post them until afterwards. They can be found at:
