course description
The purpose of this class is to
read and to appreciate the poetry of the most highly regarded Roman
poet
in its social, historical and political context. Since many students
will
have already read much of the Aeneid, we will be reading
Virgil's
Eclogues
and (time permitting) Georgics, hexameter poems on rural themes
that have also exerted a profound influence on the Western literary
tradition. NOTE: THE READINGS FOR THIS CLASS ARE IN LATIN.
