Our goal is to improve Latin reading skills and to appreciate Ovid’s playful love poetry. We will at the same time become acquainted with the historical and cultural context of Ovid’s text, and with the intricacies of his Latin.  Prerequisite: a 2000-level Latin class. NOTE: THE READINGS FOR THIS CLASS ARE IN LATIN. This course fulfills University of Florida general education requirements H (Humanities) and N (International).

required texts (purchase online or at local bookstores)

weekly schedule
we will be reading approximately 50-150 lines of Latin text per week, depending on the pace of the class, and will have either a quiz or an exam almost every week.

evaluation (for UF grades generally, see https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/regulations/info/grades.aspx)
grades will be based on class participation, quizzes, exams and a final:

class participation = 10% of total grade: full credit will be given to students who come to class prepared to translate and discuss the assigned passages. Missing more than 3 unexcused absences will result in a loss of class participation points. Requirements for class attendance and make-up exams, assignments, and other work in this course are consistent with university policies that can be found in the online catalog at: https://catalog.ufl.edu/ugrad/current/regulations/info/attendance.aspx

weekly quizzes (non-cumulative): 6% each, best 10 of 11 = 60% of total grade

exams (non-cumulative): 15% each = 30% of total grade (during regularly scheduled class)
