The aim of this course is to acquaint graduate students with the language of ancient Greek epic and with current issues in the interpretation of the poems. Primary readings will include the Theogony in its entirety, selections from the Works and Days, and the major Homeric Hymns (to Demeter, Apollo, Aphrodite and Hermes). Secondary readings (all made available online using UF’s Ares system) will cover a few classic articles and a broad selection of current scholarship.  NOTE: THIS IS A GRADUATE SEMINAR; PRIMARY READINGS FOR THIS COURSE ARE IN ANCIENT GREEK.

final grades will be based on class participation (80%: coming to class prepared to translate and discuss readings) and on completion of a brief (650-750 words) abstract describing a paper that might be delivered at a scholarly meeting (20%).
