The purpose of
this class is to reinforce grammatical concepts, to improve reading
skills in Latin, and to acquaint students with one of the most
influential legal and philosophical thinkers in the Western tradition
in his social and historical context. NOTE:
THE READINGS FOR THIS CLASS ARE IN LATIN.

class participation = 10% of total grade:
full credit will be given to students who come to class prepared to
translate and discuss the assigned passages. ATTENDANCE is mandatory;
missing more than 3 classes will result in a loss of class
participation points.
quizzes (non-cumulative) = 60% of total grade:
12 brief unannounced quizzes will be administered at the beginning of
class throughout the semester, of which the BEST 10 will be used to
calculate the final grade. There are NO MAKEUPS for the quizzes.
exams (non-cumulative): 15% each = 30% of total grade
Exam
1: Monday October 11; Exam 2: Wednesday December 8 (last class day)
grading scale: A= 90 and
above; A- = 87-89; B+ = 84-86; B = 80-83; B- = 77-79; C+ = 74-76; C =
70-73;
C- = 67-69 (note that a C- is not a passing grade); D+ = 64-66; D =
60-63; D- = 57-59; E = 56-0

This
