The purpose of this class is to reinforce grammatical concepts, to improve reading skills in Latin, and to appreciate some of the best and most influential poets in the Western tradition in their cultural and historical contexts. Our focus will be on three elegiac/lyric poets from the Late Republican Period of Roman history (the 1st century BCE).

class participation = 10% of total grade: full credit will be given to students who come to class prepared to translate and discuss the assigned passages. ATTENDANCE is mandatory; missing more than 3 classes will result in a loss of class participation points.

quizzes (non-cumulative) = 60% of total grade: 11 brief unannounced quizzes will be administered at the beginning of class throughout the semester, of which the BEST 10 will be used to calculate the final grade.

exams (non-cumulative): 10% each = 30% of total grade
    Exam 1: Friday, February 4 (Tibullus)
    Exam 2: Wednesday, March 2 (Propertius)
    Exam 3: Wednesday April 20 (Horace)

grading scale: A= 90 and above; A- = 87-89; B+ = 84-86; B = 80-83; B- = 77-79; C+ = 74-76; C = 70-73;    
                                C- = 67-69 (note that UF does not consider a C- to be a passing grade);
                                D+ = 64-66; D = 60-63; D- = 57-59; E = 56 and below
