Our
goal is to improve Latin reading
skills while enjoying the fascinating and at times outrageous novels of
Petronius and Apuleius. We will at the same time become acquainted with
the historical and
cultural
contexts of these authors and their works. NOTE: THE READINGS FOR THIS
CLASS ARE IN
LATIN. This course fulfills
University of Florida general education requirements H (Humanities) and
N (International).

grades will be based on class
participation,
quizzes, and two exams:
class
participation = 10% of total grade:
full credit will be given to students who come to class prepared to
translate
and discuss the assigned passages
quizzes
(non-cumulative) = 60% of total grade: 15 brief unannounced quizzes
will be administered at the beginning of class throughout the semester,
of which the BEST 10 will be used to calculate the final grade. There
are NO MAKEUPS for the quizzes.

= 30% of total grade
Monday October 12, Wednesday December 9 (last class
day)
