Want a Letter of Recommendation From Me?
I am willing to write letters of
recommendation for almost any student who has had me for a course and
achieved at least an . If
you have had more than one course with me, you just need to have
achieved an A in one of them and not less than a B in the other(s).
If you fit these criteria, here is what you need to do:
1. Formally contact me by email (jlane@crim.ufl.edu) requesting
a letter. In this email, include:
- What the recommendation letter is needed for
- The date you need it by--
- Please note: "As soon as possible" is not useful for me for two
reasons. (1) For me, that could mean when I have time, which could
be months! (2) I often have many to do and will do them in order
of the due date. Please give me the latest date on which I can
mail it. It's best to put a post-it with the due date on the
front, so I can quickly figure it out when I look at the stack.
- The course(s) you have taken with me and your grade in each one
- Your GPA
2. I will get back to you quickly about whether or not I feel
comfortable providing you a letter. If I do, I will ask you to
provide me with the following information:
- A letter to me telling me: why I should be recommending
you, what is unique about you, what you have in your background that
makes you well-suited for the postion/job/school to which you are
applying. This part is critical for a good letter, because I
often do not know students in my classes as well as might like.
And, schools like personalized letters rather than "form"
letters. You might include here: job experience, extra-curricular
activities, classes, experiences, etc. that you think set you apart
from other folks who might be applying.
- Your self statement/personal letter which you are submitting to
the school you are applying to
- Your resume
- Your transcript (it can be a xerox copy or one printed from the
web)
- Your contact information--phone number, address, email
- The names and addresses of people to whom I am to send your
letter(s)
You can drop this packet of information off to me in my office (Walker
212) or in my mailbox (Walker 201).
