HEADLINE: Members File for Udall's Spacious Suite in Cannon

BYLINE: By Karen Foerstel

BODY:

Just two days after Rep. Mo Udall (D-Ariz) resigned from the House, his
Congressional colleagues began a scramble to land his commodious office.

On Monday, the first workday after Udall's May 4 resignation, more than 50
Members had filed for the suite at 234 Cannon.

"(The number of applicants) changes hour to hour," said Bob Miley,
superintendent of the House office buildings.

Members can continue filing for the office until noon on May 15, when the
room will be awarded to the most senior Member to request the space. In case of
a tie in seniority, a lottery will be held.

During his 30 years in Congress, Udall acquired a spacious suite of 1,500
square feet, about one-third larger than the House average. The office, which
faces Independence Avenue, also offers a beautiful view of the Capitol and its
grounds.

The suite has drawn the attention of "everybody from freshmen to the most
senior Members on the Hill," said Erik Barnett, Udall's press secretary - though
freshmen, of course, have no chance to land the digs. Udall had served for 30
years, and it's doubtful that a Member who has been in the House less than 20
years will get the suite.

Barnett said a steady parade of staffers and Members themselves has come
through to office to peruse the accommodations.

"Everybody's been very respectful," Barnett said. "They started coming by
(Monday) morning, about one an hour. We're doing our best Vanna White routine to
show the office."
