Required Text: Selley, Elements of Petroleum Geology,
2nd Ed.
Course Objectives:
1) To introduce you to petroleum geology, specifically the origins and types of hydrocarbons and the locations of hydrocarbons (sedimentary basins, reservoirs, traps, seals).
2) To introduce you to exploration techniques: drilling methods, seismics and interpretation, well logs and interpretation.
3) To provide experience presenting information, as well as evaluating
presentation by others.
Work Expectations:
1) Two projects (problems)
a) seismic interpretation and presentation (15%)
b) log interpretation and presentation (15%)
2) Two exams: mid-term and non-cumulative final (20% each)
3) Paper and presentations:
a) The Petroleum Geology of __________ (10%)
b) Preliminary presentation (~5 minutes) (7.5%)
c) Final presentation (~20 minutes) (12.5%)
Suggestions for topics that could be included in the paper (the list
is not inclusive):
1) Location of the petroleum province/ previous work in the region.
2) Geologic history: the structure and stratigraphy of the region.
3) Petroleum geology of the region:
a) Are source rocks present? Are they mature?
b) Are traps present? What type of traps are they? What forms them? How large are they?
c) What is the relative timing of petroleum migration and trap formation?
4) What are the estimates of hydrocarbons generated, reserves in place, recoverable reserves, economics of production
5) Other factors: political stability of the region
My lecture notes will be posted on the web. I will try to post them
before lecture, but may not be able to post them until after the lecture.
