Library Scavenger Hunt [Note: Take this opportunity to start finding sources for your research projects!]

Part A Library website [www.uflib.ufl.edu] / www

Section I  The Library catalog
1.  Use a title search to find a non-electronic version of The life of Olaudah Equiano; or, Gustavus Vassa, the African.  Provide a complete citation (using Chicago-style documentation) and the call number.

When and where was the Narrative first published?

2.  Do a basic search using the field "anywhere" for "slave trade."  Approximately how many hits did you get?

Narrow your results by clicking on the + sign for the "Subject: Topic" option in the left column. To identify primary sources, select "History--sources". How many are available?

Provide a complete citation and call number for one of these sources. [Hint: Sort by "pub date (oldest)" using the "Sort by" drop down box in the upper right.]

3. Locate the record of the book entitled New American World by David B. Quinn.  What is the title of volume 3?

List the general subject headings.

Using the subject headings, find another edited collection of primary sources related to the discovery and exploration of America (does not have to be British Atlantic).  Provide a complete citation and call number.

4.  Do a basic search using the field "anywhere" for "Benjamin Franklin."  Provide a complete citation for, and the call number of, a biography written in the last 20 years.

Find a primary source written by or about Franklin that is available in microform. [Hints: you may want to re-sort your search to list by publication date, oldest first. Also, in the "Narrow results by column", you can select "microform" under Format.] Provide a complete citation (the title may be long, so after the main title, you can just put ". . . ") and the call number.

5.  Using a basic keyword search, find a primary source for the British House of Commons in the period of the American War of Independence (1760s-1780s).  [Hint: you may want to narrow your results by "Subject: Time Period."]  Provide a complete citation and indicate the format/location.

6. List three ways you can view Carita Doggett's Dr. Andrew Turnbull and the New Smyrna Colony of Florida.

Find and cite one other secondary source on the New Smyrna colony or Dr. Andrew Turnbull.

7. What can you do if a book you want is checked out to another user?

8. How can you borrow a copy of a book the library does not own? Where (on the website) do you go to request it?
