Narrative Actants (Foss and Greimas)

Any narrative is organized by a premise--a cultural value or belief--that determines the outcome of a drama (whether and in what way the protagonists achieve their object or aim). As Slotkin demonstrated in a series of books, filmmakers (storytellers) and policy makers often draw upon the same myths or premises (an historical event becomes mythical when it attains the status of a precedent guiding decision making). Egents consulting for the EmerAgency attempt to intervene in public policy formation at the level of premises or myth creation, to call attention to this role of sender and the movement of value through narrative into political decision making.
