Building
Materials
The construction of the structure is based on sixteenth-century
building plans gathered and interpreted by National Park Service historian
Albert Manucy. Young pine trees and pine saplings (Pinus sp.)
were collected for use as the frame of the building.
Saw palmetto fronds (Serenoa repens) were collected as
needed for use as the thatching. For this experiment an organic bundling
twine of 100% sisal (Agave sisalana), made from the fibers of a
Mexican and Central American plant, was used.
