CASTLES AND KNIGHTS OF THE MIDDLE AGES



1.  What did it mean to be noble?

 

 
 
 

- the estates in the Middle Ages: those who pray, those who fight, those who work

- many of those who were fighting often lived in castles

- each castle was surrounded by the lands of the castle's lord

- inside the castle, there were many towers, rooms for the inhabitants, kitchens, and storage rooms


2. What was it to live in a castle?


- medieval castles were also places of meeting and feasting for the knights

- knights did not move around dressed up in armor

- armor was used only in war or in tournaments

- in order to recognize each other in battle, knights painted their shields and arms with colors and figures (coats of arms)
 

3. What did it mean to be a knight?


- knights were dubbed in special ceremonies by their superior lords, to whom they owed loyalty and service in times of war

- knights always behaved according to a code of chivalry
