What is aphasia?

Aphasia is an acquired disorder that results from damage to the language centers of the brain, usually on the left side of the brain. Aphasia can affect a person's abilitiy to speak, comprehend, read, and write. The most common cause of aphasia is stroke, but other sources of brain damage such as traumatic brain injury, brain tumor or gunshot wound can also affect language.

Treatment for aphasia

A certified Speech-Language Pathologist typically conducts detailed speech and language evaluations and provides treatment to persons with aphasia. There are many types of treatment which are typically tailored to a person's individual needs.

Treatment research is ongoing to improve outcomes of treatment for persons with aphasia and other langauge disorders. Currently, The aphasia Research Laboratory at the University of Florida is currently conducting treatment studies for persons with aphasia. Monolingual English and Spanish/English bilingual speakers are invited to participate. Individuals for whom the treatments are appropriate receive treatment free of charge. All initial testing is also free of charge. If interested, please contact Lisa A. Edmonds at edmonds@csd.ufl.edu.
