Welcome to the Utrecht Summer School! The International Relations Office and the Faculty of Arts welcome you to the course European Cultures and Identities 2006 (ECI) and Dutch Society & Culture 2006 (DSC). ProgrammeThe course ECI consists of two weeks including an excursion to Antwerp and Brussels. The course DSC consists of 4 weeks. Every week has its own theme.
Classes of DSC take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and two excursions on Friday 25 July (National Park ‘De Hoge Veluwe’ and Kröller-Müller museum) and Friday 8 August (Historical city-tour Leiden and Dutch parliament in The Hague) are part of the academic programme of the course. More details about the programme will be presented to you upon arrival. ArrivalBy planeSchiphol Amsterdam Airport has a train station as well. Buy a ticket to Utrecht Central Station (€ 6,50). Take the train to Duivendrecht, where you will change trains (watch out for pickpockets!): find your way to the upper platform, from where the train to Utrecht will depart. Intercity trains are faster than local trains. When in doubt, you can always ask someone at the ticket office. You will soon notice that almost everyone in the Netherlands speaks English fairly well. RegistrationThe registration for the course European Cultures and Identities 2006 and Dutch Society & Culture 2006 will take place on: Monday 3 July from 9:00 until 17:00 Place: TBA (The location will be about 15 minutes from Utrecht Central station). PaymentsAll the remaining course-fee payments have to be completed in cash on registration day. HousingYour accommodation will be available from Monday 3 July until Friday 11 August 12.00. A room is booked for each one of you in a studentdorm. On registration day (Monday 3 July) your address will be given to you. In order to receive your keys, you will have to sign a contract confirming that you will leave your room clean and in order before departure. The rooms are located in Utrecht, mainly at De Uithof. If you wish to come a few days earlier or you want to stay longer, you will have to stay in a youth hostel (make your booking well in advance!). Some options are: Low Budget Hostel “Strowis” Boothstraat 8 A bit more expensive: Hotel Ouwi F.C. Donderstraat 12 Take bus line 11, get out at busstop Oorsprongpark. The F.C. Donderstraat is a 5 minute walk from there. WeatherThe weather in an Utrecht summer can be pleasant, sunny and warm, i.e. 20-25 degrees Celsius. But nothing is less predictable than the Dutch weather, so it is very likely that we will have colder days with clouds and rain as well. Therefore you are well advised to not only bring summer clothes, but something a little warmer and a raincoat too. What more to bringThe housing office supplies beds with a mattress and pillow only. Therefore you are kindly requested to bring your own sheets and a cover/sleeping bag. Furthermore, you will have to bring your own towels. All studentdorms have a washing machine as well. MealsUnfortunately the university canteens are closed during the summer. However, all accommodations have a well equipped, shared kitchen, where you can cook for yourselves (and for eachother!). In other words: be prepared to prepare your own meals. We are looking forward to meeting you and hope you will have a pleasant trip! Kind regards, Important telephone numbers
