T.A. Handbook
Teaching Assistant’s Guide to the Information Highway
TA Orientation
Conducted by Dr. Sharon M. DiFino
Welcome to the wonderful world of teaching!
Although many of you will have had no prior “teaching experience,” all of you have already had many years of “learning experience.” Many strategies suggested in this TripTik are ones learned from former teachers, “trial and error” as well as from the research think tank.
In order to facilitate a smooth take-off in your teaching adventure, the info highway booklet proposes tips for dealing with the basic concepts of teaching. So buckle up as you are about to enter the T.A. virtual Information Highway!!
Predeparture Planning
Traveling requires well thought-out planning. Nobody likes to take a trip without gathering information, having a destination and planning out activities. Teaching is also very similar in that respect. Setting goals, designing lessons as well as activities also needs to be mapped out well in advance. Before the first day of teaching you need to check off the following items:
Materials
- roster of students in class and grade book for record keeping
- correct number of photocopies of course description and test schedule
- textbook and ancillary materials
- pen/pencil and paper
- transparencies with appropriate markers
Classroom and Equipment
Check time and location of classroom as well as the amount of time it will take to walk to the class from Dauer Hall, the parking lot or bus stop.

Is there…
- an overhead projector present in the classroom and does it work? Turn on the overhead projector to check if it is working!
- chalk at the blackboard as well as blackboard eraser?
- proper lighting in the classroom?
- wall space for posters and maps?
Tip!
- A good classroom environment is crucial for effective learning.
- The atmosphere is something that you can create.
- Don’t be afraid to use your imagination!
- You can add a personal touch with posters, positive affirmations, maps, music and even by arranging chairs in a semi-circle.
