Class Format
The course is arranged chronologically,
beginning with the failure of Reconstruction and concluding with the U.S.'s
political and social condition at the end of the 20th century. The full
class will meet two hours each week for lecture. You are encouraged to
ask questions, contribute your own observations, and raise objections during
the lecture hours. The readings in the textbook and in the supplementary
books will be reviewed during your discussion section each week, as will
the lecture topics for that week. Because attendance has proven so crucial
to your ability to do well in this course, attendance will be required.
Please note that if you have 3 unexcused absences, you will lose a grade
in the course, and you will lose an additional grade for each additional
two unexcused absences. While this sounds punitive, it is designed to help
you. My office hours are listed above and you can also schedule a meeting
with me at most other times during the week. The teaching assistants have
a more restricted schedule and will be available during their office hours.
We encourage you to meet with us as often as necessary.
Because of the size of this class,
civil behavior and civility to one another is essential so that all have
an equal chance to learn. I will expect you to conduct yourself like mature
UF students and to treat the teaching assistants and one another with respect.
