Scholarly Interests

The bulk of my research considers the strategic interaction of political elites and the endogeneity of political institutions. It includes articles in The American Journal of Political Science, Democratization, Europe-Asia Studies, Government and Opposition, The Journal of Politics, and elsewhere. In Elections by Design: Parties and Patronage in Russia's Regions, I examine the origins of legislative electoral systems at the sub-national level in Russia. My current book-length project with Bill Reisinger links the evolution of federal and subnational politics in the Russian Federation to better understand the country's post-Soviet trajectory.
